Steps to Report Bullying at Busbee Elementary
(Busbee/Corbett Parent)
The faculty and staff members at Busbee Elementary and Corbett Middle have a legal, ethical, and moral obligation to protect your child from bullying, harassment, and intimidation.
IF YOUR CHILD REPORTS TO YOU THAT HE/SHE HAS BEEN BULLIED, HARASSED, OR INTIMIDATED, PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW TO REPORT THE BULLYING, HARASSMENT, OR INTIMIDATION INCIDENT TO AN ADMINISTRATOR.
STEP 1: Listen carefully to your child. Believe what he/she says. Don't ask questions like "What did you do?" Why were you bullied?" "Did you bully back?" Remember, never blame the victim! Instead ask questions like "Who bullied you? How were you bullied? Where did the bullying take place? "Were there any witnesses?" Did you report the bullying to a teacher, guidance counselor, or an administrator?"
STEP 2: Document what your child reported to you. (This documentation might include notes from the bully, pictures of bruises, torn clothing, and other evidences of bullying). If you suspect that your child has been physically or sexually abused or assaulted, contact the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at 1 (803) 642-1761 or 1 (803) 643-1995.
STEP 3: Fill out a "Bullying Reporting Form." You can access the form on p. 28 of this handbook, online at http://busbeecorbett.acps.schoolfusion.us/, or you can pick one up at the main office.
STEP 4: After you complete the "Bullying Reporting Form", request a meeting with an administrator. When you meet with the administrator, share what your child reported to you about the bullying incident. Provide a copy of the "Bullying Reporting Form" and any evidence of bullying to the administrator.
STEP 5: Document your conversation with the principal/administrator. Ask the administrator what the school's policy is on bullying and what procedures will be put in place to keep your child safe. Find out when the administrator will address the bullying incident. Ask the administrator to follow up with you when the situation has been addressed. Document this conversation as well.
STEP 6: Encourage your child to talk to his/her guidance counselor to discuss his/her experience(s) and feelings. Tell your child that their guidance counselor can help him/her develop safe, effective ways to deal with a bully. Keep an open line of communication with your child. Encourage him/her to keep you informed about his/her school day.
Remind your child to Recognize, Refuse, and Report Bullying!
